With what little brain cells I have left from figuring out computer problems, I waste on watching anime. Here are some quick reviews on what I’ve seen, with links to fuller reviews if I feel like it.

The “Not On US TV” bit is more of an exercise in frustration over differing social standards than anything else. If you take out every typical excuse why an anime series won’t appear on US TV (cartoons are for kids, demand, economics, episodes relying on each other) then this would be the reason left.

If you think Anime’s expensive, it can be but there’s a reason for that. I don’t know who the people are that spend $30 per DVD for the latest anime, but I sure don’t know any of them. Most people I know (including myself) watch stuff on YouTube, Hulu, or Joost and buy box sets if it’s something we really like.

Ah! My Goddess: Flights of Fancy
POSITIVES
Wishy-washy romance stuff that comes off surprisingly well.

NEGATIVES
We can always call the good place Heaven, but not call the bad place Hell?
NOT ON US TV BECAUSE
Only one religion can have a heaven and hell, am I right?

Calling a vampire bite a “kiss” combined with “big brother.”

My-HiME (Mai-HiME)
POSITIVES
People act refreshingly normal. Fan service kept in line during normal episode parts.

NEGATIVES
Psychological torment a bit much. Disproportianately fan-service-laden character-features borderline creepy.
NOT ON US TV BECAUSE
Get rid of the those bonus scenes, and you’d still too many boob-related fan-service bits.

Pani Poni Dash
POSITIVES
Hillarity abounds.

NEGATIVES
Unless you’re not into random-as-funny.
NOT ON US TV BECAUSE
Relies heavily on Japanese pop culture references.

“Eye” overlay during flashbacks. Ending cut short. Fanboys uttering “yuri” and “incest.”
NOT ON US TV BECAUSE
High school girl with gun, shooting herself (sometimes) in the head with (antiviral) drugs.

Witchblade
POSITIVES
Violence and fan-service with an actual story line as the focus point. No attempt to drag the story out more than needed.

NOT ON US TV BECAUSE
Enough boob and camel toe shots to make Cinemax blush.

xxxHolic

Great storytelling involving the super-natural. “XXX” a misnomer.
